Teaching Philosophy

Approach to Piano Teaching

My principal aim is to instill a life-long love of music in each student.

I strive to foster joy, confidence, and creativity in every lesson. I carefully craft lesson plans to ensure that students feel a sense of accomplishment each week. And, while I introduce all students to a wide range of musical styles, I make sure that each has ample opportunity to play and create music that reflects their own unique interests.

I judge my success as a piano teacher by the depth and longevity of my student's relationship with the piano. Some of my students have gone on to pursue careers in music while others have chosen different paths. All have acquired skills that enable them to engage with music in ways that are meaningful to them.

Performances and Exams

Performances, Exams & Competitions

Music is meant to be shared! I strongly encourage all of my students to perform in whatever way makes the most sense for them, whether that be a complete solo recital at a concert hall, participation in an informal house concert, or outreach concerts in hospitals and/or retirement homes.  I typically organize one studio recital and two outreach concerts each year.

I am an enthusiastic proponent of Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Examinations. At these exams, students perform several contrasting repertoire selections and technical exercises, and demonstrate their sight-reading and ear training abilities. RCM Exams are great goals to work towards and they provide students with helpful feedback from expert adjudicators. I am also familiar with ABRSM Examinations, which are similar, and I am happy to work with students towards these as well.

Competitions can also be a wonderful source of motivation for some students. I discuss competitions on a case by case basis with my students and their families.

Studio Admission

Studio Admission and Rates

I currently offer in-your-home lessons in the Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, and Adams Morgan areas of D.C. I welcome students of all ages and levels to my studio!

My rates are $60, $80, and $100 for 40, 60 and 90-minute lessons respectively.

All students should be prepared to practice at least five days a week on average. When it comes to practicing, I emphasize quality over quantity. Students should get up from each practice session feeling proud that they have accomplished what they set out to do, whether they just spent 20 minutes or 2 hours at the piano.
